Employment in Grays Harbor County

The job situation in Grays Harbor is bleak.

A person is defined as as unemployed if they are seeking employment and not gainfully employed (receiving pay).

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the unemployment rate in Grays Harbor County is over 7%. Employment growth, the rate new nonagricultural jobs are being created is negative, almost -2%. The state unemployment average of 4.4%, is consistent with the national average.

Traditionally the local economy was dependent on the timber industry, commercial fishing and shipping, and but for decades these industries have declined. Timber and fishing no longer represent a sustainable economic future for the region but the full-service deep-water Port of Grays Harbor and shipbuilding does.

Hospitality, casino and tourism jobs are on the rise but most of the positions represent low paying seasonal positions.

Stafford Creek State Prison and Westport Shipyards are major employers.

Job Corps is a free education and vocational training program administered by the US Department of Labor that helps people ages 16 - 24 learn a trade, earn a high school diploma or GED and find a good job. They receive a monthly allowance; that increases the longer they stay in the program. Job Corps provides career support for up to 12 months after they graduate. Students must be US citizens or legal residents; meet income requirements; and willing, to participate fully in an educational environment. Funded by the US Congress, since 1964 Job Corps has been training students in a safe, drug-free environment.
